Faith-based group is awarded maximum federal funding to increase adult ex-offender employment and reduce recidivism.
(July 23, 2012)

Word of Hope Ministries, Inc. has been awarded a $1,212,000 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to serve ex-offenders returning to high-poverty, high-crime neighborhoods.  Participating adult ex-offenders will receive occupational training leading to credentials in high-demand industries.  Additionally, they will be offered employment preparation, education, mentoring, and other supportive services such as substance abuse counseling and mental health treatment.  The ultimate goal of the project is to increase ex-offenders’ long-term employability and reduce the likelihood of recidivism.

The faith-based group is one of only 18 organizations nationwide to receive the funding under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Reintegration of Ex-Offenders Adult program.  Word of Hope Ministries, Inc. was one of only nine organizations nationally awarded the maximum amount of funding available for a project.  The organization will use that funding to assist 400 adult ex-offenders in gaining and maintaining employment and building the skills needed to avoid returning to incarceration.

Word of Hope Ministries, Inc. is a faith-based, nonprofit social services agency sponsored by Holy Cathedral Church of God in Christ.  The faith-based organization retained Jericho Resources, Inc. to prepare its bid for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Reintegration of Adult Ex-Offenders-Generation 5 program.  As part of that effort, Jericho Resources, Inc. interviewed staff; researched best practices as well as poverty, re-entry, and crime rates; prepared mapping illustrating the high-need service delivery area; recommended partnerships; drafted customized partnership letters of agreement and memoranda of understanding; and prepared all grant application sections for submission.

Each year, 500 or more ex-offenders transition from state correctional facilities to the highest-poverty, highest-crime neighborhoods to be served in this project,” said Jericho Resources, Inc. President William Martin.  “The Reintegration of Ex-Offenders Adult program grant not only will provide an invaluable investment in the lives of ex-offenders, but also in high-need neighborhoods that have few resources to address the magnitude of the challenge.”
